WASHING YOUR YAFFA WIG
Take a styrofoam head - and pin the wig to the head at the temples (using t-pins) if you have difficulty getting it to stay put. It’s best to work in a big basin, even the bathtub if you don't have a sink with good enough water pressure - you should really have a spray to get into the wig with water. If not, it's okay.
It’s best to wet the wig and run a drop of conditioner through it to be able to comb it well - rinse - then use shampoo - liberally - product choice is up to you - just lean towards something lightly moisturizing - no build up kind of thing. Something as simple as Garnier Fructis Sleek & Smooth (for its price and its results). If you use a lot of product on the wig (i.e., hairspray) – it is harder to wash out – and might need a clarifying shampoo as well as washing it twice until there is no longer a sticky feel to the hair.
Wash it very well - scrub the cap under the nape of the neck where it sits on your head (you can even unpin it at this point and scrub the inside of the cap if you feel it is not getting clean enough, and then RINSE – RINSE all that shampoo out - every last drop.
Then you can apply a lightweight moisturizing conditioner (again with the Garnier Fructis) - liberally - and brush through - let it sit there for 10-20 minutes (REMEMBER: you don’t want to overload the mono part or knots on the top of the wig with conditioner – so it’s best to avoid that area). And then rinse, rinse, rinse. When it's all out, you can wring it out in towel and put it back on the head and comb it in the general direction you intend to wear it - you can then let it dry.
Once every 2-3 weeks, or whenever you feel like it needs it, you can do a deeper conditioning. The Arbonne Seasource Detox Conditioner works wonders on wigs. Whatever product you do use, do not seal it up in a Ziploc bag, it is adequate to simply wrap it loosely in a towel.
If it’s a naturally curly wig, you scrunch it while it’s wet and then apply a lightweight curl defining cream if you like. If it’s a straight wig, literally let it dry 99.9% and then finish the last bit up with a blow dryer and curling iron. This will keep your human hair piece from getting puffy on you, as well as limit the wear and tear on the wig.
Worn everyday, it should be washed about once a week (sometimes longer). You will “feel” when it needs to be washed – it won’t have the same bounce and the hair will not feel as clean.
